A.    Background of the Study

According to Torrance, Waes&Galbrait (2007: 23) Writing is a visual representation of spoken language. In  Junior  High  School,  learning  English  is  to  develop  the  language skills, the  aim  of  teaching English in junior high school to university is to develop working knowledge of English  reflected  from  effective writing  ability,  ability  to  make a visual representation of spoken English. In related to the written language, writing is a means of communicating ideas and information which are related to the thinking process and expression of ideas in written form. It is important for the students to express their ideas and opinions. Writing is a complex activity. There are several process, mental and physical being carrier at the same time. Writing is used by educated people to persuade and influence other people.

Writing is one of the four macro skills needed to be mastered as we learn a language and is one of the productive skills. Being a productive skill means that during the practice, we act to produce the language. Writing itself is indeed an active skill as in the act of creating a text, we need to do some steps like setting goals, generating ideas, organizing information, selecting appropriate language usage and use, making a draft, reading and reviewing it, then revising and editing (Hedge,  2000: 308).

Based on Huy (2015: 54) Writing is a skill, which is not only helpful in writing to English, but also useful to improve other considerably. Although  writing  is  an  essential  skill,  many  students  at  junior  school  are  not  interested  in  it, many  students  were  never  required  to  learn  proper spelling or grammar. These poor students come to think that “English” and “writing” are nothing but spelling and grammar. To them, writing means inevitable failure. Good writing is sometimes they believe they will never be able to achieve, because they not only identify good writing with proper spelling  and  grammar etc.

Based on Weigle (2002: 1) Writing  is  one  of  important  skills  that  students  need  to  develop.  The ability to write is very important for the academic context, business and personal  relation  in  the  global  community. In  the academic context, this ability is used to measure the students‟ writing proficiency  such  as  composing  academic  easy  or  writing  some  texts which are included in the curriculum. In the business context, the ability to  write  is  important  for  those  who  make  business  relation  with  other across the nation by sending email or composing business report. writing a letter or message is also a means of communication which can connect the relationship between people indirectly

The problems that students at junior school  usually  have  to  face  are  the  motivations  for  my  research. According to Armstrong (2000: 7) suggests board games as a teaching strategy that might suit students with interpersonal intelligence because they provide an excellent setting for interaction between students.


B.     Identification of Problem

Based on the background above that the learning writing skill and ability most important. The responsibility lies on the teacher's shoulders to enhance their students' abilities to express themselves effectively. In order for students to writing well they need to have to expand their cognitive academic language proficiency level. It contains the genres of power that leads to success. It is important for students to learn how to think critically and creatively. It is the teacher's responsibility to initiate this thought process. Writing improves a person's ability to think concisely and clearly. Students learn to organize their ideas in a cohesive and flowing manner.

    As teachers, we are given the responsibility of improving and enhancing students' writing, in both content and in organization.  In order for these children to succeed, they need to be equipped and well aware of the genres of power which rule the world. Whether oral or written, the different types of genres are a child's key to power, prestige and privilege. By developing these styles of writing, a child is empowered to use this key to unlock any door that leads to success. Writing is a transitory verb, therefore, one should not just teach writing, but teaches to write something. 

From the explanation above the researcher will apply one of teaching strategy or tools and media. This is an interesting way and it can increase the student’s writing ability, namely Board Game. This game is designed to create the students’ Relating to the case above, the writer conducted a research under the title:” Increasing the Students’ writing skill by Using Board Game. A Classroom Action Research in Seventh Grade SMP .


C.    Limitation of Problem

Based on the identification problem above the researcher limited the content is a very important component of writing which should be clear for the students to understand the message conveyed and gain information from it. Whereas, the vocabulary of writing is concerned to what the students want to write. By this reason, this study will be focused on improving the students’ writing ability by Using Board Game. A Classroom Action Research in Seventh Grade SMP .


D.    Formulation of Problem

Based on the previous description, the researcher presents research question, as follow “How can students’ writing skills be increased through the use of board game activity?”


E.     Purpose of Study

In this research, the writer arranges purpose this research was held. Bisedes, it was to incresae based on the formulation of the problem stated as follow:

1.      To know how students’ writing skill

2.      To know how board game can develop student writing skill

3.      To know how the teacher implement board game to develop student writing skill


F.     Significance of Study

1.    The Theoretical Benefit

a.         The result of the research can be useful for students as strategy in writing in classroom situation.

b.        The result of the research can be useful for English teacher in implementing Board Game in teaching learning process.

c.         The result of the research is used as reference for those who want to conduct a research of students’ writing skill 


2.    Practical Benefit

a.         The result of the research will help the teacher in increasing their writing skill

b.        The result of the research will give information to teacher about strategy in teaching writing skill.
