Definition of Reading

Reading has various definitions; it depends on the variety of people’s point of view, so the writer presents as follow definitions of reading:

Cline, F., Johnstone, C., & King, T. (2006:2) point out the definition of reading as follow

1.      Reading is decoding and understanding written text. Decoding requires translating the symbols of writing systems into the spoken words they represent. Understanding is determined by the purposes for reading, the context, the nature of the text, and the readers’ strategies and knowledge.

2.      Reading is decoding and understanding text for particular reader purposes. Readers decode written text by translating text to speech, and translating directly to meaning. To understand written text, readers engage in constructive processes to make text meaningful, which is the end goal or product.

3.      Reading is the process of deriving meaning from text. For the majority of readers, this process involves decoding written text. Some individuals require adaptations to support the decoding process. Understanding text is determined by the purposes for reading, the context, the nature of the text, and the readers’ strategies and knowledge

In addition Bennete (1997: 23) Reading is a visual process - vision is a symbolic process of seeing an item or symbol and translating it into an idea or image. Images are processed into concepts and whole dimensions of thought.

Gambrell, Collins & Pressley (2002: 4-5) Reading comprehension as acquiring meaning from written text with text being deļ¬ned as a range of material from books to the. In this meaning making process, the reader interacts with the print and is involved in making sense of the message. Readers comprehend text by acquiring meaning, confirming meaning, and creating meaning. In sum, reading comprehension is the process of meaning making

Reading comprehension is the activity between the reader and the writer’s idea. Where the writer sends his/her idea in the written symbols and then the reader catches the idea it. Readung is on activity cognitive process of interactive with printing and minitoring comprehension to establish meaning (Kustaryo in Hasriani, 2006:22).
